As our mythology-influenced name suggests, folklore is at the very core of Selkie’s inception. The fantasy of fashion is often overlooked in current times, but we embrace the ethereal joy of dressing. So when the pandemic hit and we had to quarantine, a very stark reality seeped in. Trapped inside, wishing for freedom and day-dreaming about the future, there was one iconic fairy tale that sprung to mind — Rapunzel. Although our Rapunzel is thoroughly modern; she isn’t waiting for some Prince Charming to save her, she’s perfectly capable of saving herself.
Our Spring ‘22 collection “Out of the Tower” reflects that reverie to real world parallel; a celebration of freedom and exceptional appreciation for the beauty in life that can only be born from catastrophe. This season also represents the personal experience and growth of our founder; after the loss of her first brand, she’s been able to be liberated in a life-affirming and explosively powerful way. Drawing from joyful moments of the past, present and future, the Rapunzel collection bursts forth in jubilant shades of comforting pastel, freshly blooming floral prints, delicate pinks and fearless bold black. An adventure of buoyant gowns detailed with breathtaking ruffles, voluminous fairytale mini puffs, lightweight cotton renaissance dresses, irreverent vintage-inspired bloomers, and perfectly-slouchy T-shirts. A dreamy, passionate story so fiercely feminine it becomes punk; we don’t need an excuse to wear a ballgown, being alive and free is enough of a reason to celebrate in extravagant style. Embrace the transition to a fresh start, a renewal of seasons and self, a step towards what change has come, and will come, and will come, and will come.
