A walk through the Rococo exhibit at the Getty center will leave you breathless and inspired, as if you've just had a private conversation with some of the most influential Royals of history. The whole place explodes with gilded details, giant portraits and glossy oak furnishings. Most inspiring, though are the linens; incredible beds draped in toile canopies and matching duvets.
The Babydoll Toile print is a nod to this era, a bed-becoming-a-dress, an explosion of Rococo whimsy layers! The puff dress is lined with petite lace at the neck and sleeve, and it's a beauty to behold. Maybe you're not going to the Met Ball any time soon, but you can certainly wear it to the Met Museum instead and snap some pics looking like art amongst the art. Put on sunglasses for the ultimate modern effect.
The word “toile” comes from the French word for linen cloth. The word is shortened from the full name toile de Jouy, which means linen or cloth from the town of Jouy-en-Josas, in the suburbs of Paris. Toile de Jouy was a specific type of linen printed with romantic, pastoral patterns in a single color—usually black, blue, or red—on an unbleached fabric. To spin it and print it on organza felt modern and a touch more femme.
Although the word toile means fabric, the word toile has evolved to also refer to the original design aesthetic of the fabric. Toile designs are popular for non-fabric items like wallpaper and fine china.
Toile also refers to a test garment pattern makers and designers use to perfect a new design.
During the reign of Louis XIV, France had become the dominant European power, and the combination of great wealth and peaceful stability led the French to turn their attention toward personal affairs and the enjoyment of worldly pleasures. When the King died in 1715, his heir Louis XV was only five years old, so the Regency, led by the Duc d' Orléans, ruled France until the Dauphin came of age. The Duke was known for his hedonistic lifestyle, and Rococo's aesthetics seemed the perfect expression of the era's sensibility. Taking the throne in 1723, Louis XV also became a noted proponent and patron of Rococo architecture and design. Since France was the artistic center of Europe, the artistic courts of other European countries soon followed suit in their enthusiasm for similar embellishments.
Rococo painting, which originated in early 18th century Paris, is characterized by soft colors and curvy lines, and depicts scenes of love, nature, amorous encounters, light-hearted entertainment, and youth. The word “rococo” derives from rocaille, which is French for rubble or rock. Rocaille refers to the shell-work in garden grottoes and is used as a descriptive word for the serpentine patterns seen in the Decorative Arts of the Rococo period.
PLEASE BUY SIZE BASED ONLY ON YOUR BUST MEASUREMENTS, often people are a size under or above what they normally think they wear. Please measure around your chest and under your breasts to find which size to order.

Selkie is low waste! We cut very small runs of inventory and pre sell many of our best sellers to ensure that each garment is going to someone that loves it. We do not produce mass bulk. Some garments have only 15-20 ever made! This is why sizes sell out quickly and our fans are fast to shop each drop.
Selkie is not 100% sustainable due to the use of polyester, but we are consciously committed to finding environmental ways to evolve- and not just as a marketing ploy. Fabric impact is complicated, we encourage you to research different fabrications and their impacts on the environment- all fabrics have an impact unless they are vintage, so it's hard to avoid. But with pressure from you on brands you love, the more we can collectively change the way factories treat their fabrics and begin to lower the expensive price tag attached to sustainable practice.
With every collection we aim to improve our footprint. Going sustainable is expensive (without mass production), which makes it hard to balance while maintaining a good price for you, our customer! With growth and purchasing power we get closer to affording our environmental goals.
